5 02 2009

Hey at last, another toy I have worked on that will hit the shelves this summer.

Battle strikers is a spinning top game with cool magnetic features like controlling tops at a distance.

I will post design sketches as soon as I can buy one!

Thanks

Very cool concept. Looking forward to getting them to try it out in our store. Maybe we will run some tournaments.

Did you get to do the product design for the Battle Strikers? Very cool.

They’re still very hard to find around town here, but a super Toys R Us opened up here yesterday so hopefully they’ll have some.

Yeah, at first we were 2 designers on a prospective project, when the idea came we added a 3rd designer to design it in a really tight schedule.
The launch is started i don’t know when it will be available everywhere but soon i guess.

Hi Jon, I bought some battle strikers and they are really cool. I am 17 and have always loved toys and am considering going to college for product design. Can you tell me what it was like to design the battle strikers and and how the process goes when you’re working on a product like this?… or how the creative process was when you worked on battle strikers?

Hi Victor,
For Battlestriker i was working with a great team, brainstorming ideas, do prototypes and presenting it to upper management. You are actually paid to play and develop a toy enjoyable for children. I encourage you to push your studies and bring your passion for toys! What is important is how you do presentations (communication), push sketches/renderings and get some technical capabilities. I wish you good luck!

Thanks a lot for your reply. It sounds like a lot of fun and I’m excited to look into it more. Previously you mention that there were two designers when the idea was brought to you. I’ve heard of inventors that are able to sell toy concepts to companies. It sounds like that could be the case with battle strikers… For a school report to help us think about college interests I’m going to do mine about toy design. I am going to research designers of cool new toys. Might you know who is originally responsible for the battle strikers concept (maybe a designer, inventor or firm that I could do further internet research on) that could help with my research. So far your response will help my report as well so thanks a lot for your time. Anything you know would be great. Thanks-

Victor

Actually, the idea came from us at Mega, no inventor involved.
But you are right sometimes we sign with inventor’s ideas we have a department working on theses cases.
Battle striker came from a quick “proof of concept” from advance department on magnetic effects.
The idea of controlling a tops trough magnets came from brainstorms and prototypes from our design team. I was part of this team. Just to say that sometimes you can start a whole product line from some original ideas.

sounds cool! do you happen to know the names of the other designers that worked in your brainstorming group. I wouldn’t mind seeing if they have an online portfolio or resume that can help me as well. Thanks again! I feel like maybe I’ve found something I could enjoy a lot…

Battle striker first generation designer team was:
Jessica livingston junior designer, Yannick Poirier Senior designer and me 🙂
But there is a lot of other professionals involved so it’s hard to point everyone but the 3 principals designers on this project was us. There was a tremendous job on marketing side and graphics to make this happen.

Hey Jon just got one more question if you have time. I reolozed that some of my favorite toys are from a company called Spin Master who I found is not that far from Mega Brands. Is it common for a designer to go from one company to another… or are there any designers at Mega that are from spin master or vice versa. It is interesting to me if one company that is in competition with another might share employies…
